Alison Wilcock remembers her Mother on VE Day

Obviously, I have no personal memories of VE Day, but my mum often mentioned that she – then aged just 12 – went and danced on Guildford High Street with everyone else. She was very proud of the fact that her aunt, my grandmother’s younger sister living in Chicago, had not long earlier sent her a beautiful dress in red, white and blue which she wore that day to celebrate the end of the war, and felt very special. Sadly, we don’t seem to have any photos of this occasion, or the dress.
