Dear Old Godhelmian, Although it’s been very cold and windy in the UK, it’s supposed to be Spring and we hope that, wherever you live, you can look forward to a better Summer than last year. Provisional Plans for Reunion 2021 We are hopeful that this can go ahead ‘live’ and have booked for it to take place at Godalming College, Tuesley Lane, Godalming GU7 1RS, on Saturday 9th October, probably 11.00 to 4.30 followed by a get-together from 4.30 to 11.00 at The Inn on the Lake, Ockford Rd, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 1RH. Here is a suggested structure for the day, British Summer Time: 11.00 to 12.00 - Meet at Godalming College – general mixing and chatting, perhaps looking at exhibits, perhaps having a tour around the buildings. 12.00 to 2.00 – Lunch – a buffet with a hot main course, salads and desserts – provided by the College caterers who did an excellent job in 2017 – served in the College canteen. Bring your own drinks. Cost will be announced as soon as we have the details as will methods of payment. Tea, coffee and biscuits/pastries supplied all day (included in the lunch cost). 2.00 to 4.00 – Further tours of the college, photocall, speeches, home-made cake if required. 2.00 to 4.00 Zoom Room – a chance to connect with your friends whether you are in Godalming or elsewhere. We know this isn’t an ideal time for everyone (6 – 8 a.m. West Coast USA and Canada, 9 – 11 a.m. East Coast USA and Canada, 9 – 11 p.m. Western Australia, 11 p.m. – 1 a.m. Victoria, 1 – 3 a.m. New Zealand). 4.30 End of session at Godalming College. 4.30 to 11.00 – Social evening at the Inn on the Lake with drinks, snacks and meals ordered and paid for by the OGs individually. Class of 1966 - 73 at 2013 Reunion Donations As you know, there is no annual subscription to the group. Nevertheless, you have been very generous so far with donations in this new iteration of the OGA.  We now need more funds, for the upkeep of the website, for postage to those without the internet, and for a possible gift to Godalming College. If you could spare a small amount, we would be very grateful. You can now make donations through the website (www.www.theoga.org) using the secure Stripe system. Just follow the instructions on the screen.  If you prefer, however, you can send your donation electronically to:
  • Account name: Old Godhelmian Association
  • Sort Code: 08 92 99
  • Account number: 65719682
  • Please identify yourself and use OGA as the reference.
Here are the other details you might need if living abroad.
  • IBAN number is GB52CPBK08929965719682
  • BIC number is CPBKGB22
If you wish to send a cheque, please contact the Treasurer, Caroline Brooks, ([email protected]).  Constitution For a variety of reasons, including authentication of our bank account, we have decided to create a simple, but flexible constitution for the OGA.  It will be available on the website and also on demand. If individual members wish to read it, please contact the Secretary, ([email protected]).  Sad News The Old Godhelmian Association is very sad to learn of the death of Martin Hyman (3rd July 1933 – 3rd April 2021) at the age of 87. Martin was one of the best distance runners of his time. He was chosen to represent Great Britain in the 10,000-metre race in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. He won the São Silvestre New Year’s road race in São Paulo, Brazil in 1962, and he considered this to be his greatest achievement, managing to beat the Ethiopian Olympic Champion, Abebe Bikila. Martin was one of a group of former GB international endurance athletes who pioneered the sport of Orienteering in England in the 1960s as well as within the school. Martin taught biology at Godalming from 1964 to 1968. He was a modest man who seldom mentioned his own achievements in the sport. He was an inspiration over decades for many people, and played a huge role in the development of athletics and orienteering in the UK. He will be very much missed, and the Old Godhelmian Association sends its condolences to his wife Margaret, sons Michael and Patrick and his many friends. If you wish to read about Martin’s life in more detail, go to the obituary section of the website (https://www.www.theoga.org/obituary ). Book The committee is still considering the practicality of writing and publishing a book to provide information and entertainment and to raise funds. It could be more sensible, efficient and above all money-saving to put the information and memories onto the website. Your views on this would be appreciated. Please contact: [email protected]  Website Quite a number of 2020 Reunion memories are on the OGA website, including the virtual tour of Godalming College [https://www.www.theoga.org/tour-of-godalming-college].
